Lake Saimaa is the 4th largest lake in Europe and consitutes Europe's largest lake area. Saimaa region is located approximately 250-300 km from Helsinki and 350 km from St. Petersburg with great connections by air, rail and road.
Most of the Tourists in Saimaa area come from Finland, Russia, Germany, Switzeland and the Netherlands. Potentially growing markets are expecially Asia and Germany.
Lake Saimaa and Savonlinna has also received major international recognition and coverage by New York Times, Daily Mail and The Independent. Wall Street Journal listed lake Saimaa amongst "five great lakes" of the world in 2015


Tourism in Savonlinna

Savonlinna is one of the few cities in Finland known as an actual tourist destination. The city is annually visited by more than 350 00 tourists (bednights in registered accommodation) and 1 mill. day visitors. Approximately 240 000 of the tourists are domestic, foreign bednights reach almost up to 80 000. International tourism in Savonlinna is growing rapidly. In 2016 growth of foreign bednights (excluding Russia) was 22,9 per cent and from Russia 6 per cent.

Savonlinnas main attractions are pristine lake areas, national parks Linnansaari and Kolovesi, national landscape of Punkaharju and forest museum Lusto together with Saimaa provincial museum. Medieval castle Olavinlinna is the nothernmost surviving castle in the world. 

During summertime there is a large number of cultural events but first and foremost Savonlinna Opera Festival that attracts more than 150 000 visitors to the city. Tourism resorts and companies offer a wide range of activities, wellbeing and relaxation in the Saimaa lake nature.
